Batman and Catwoman

A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I were invited to a masquerade party/birthday party for his sister.  I immediately came up with the Batman and Catwoman concept.  In the newest Batman movie, there is a scene where Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Catwoman are at a masquerade ball, and they dance together.  I thought, why not?  You know how much I love Batman!

So I immediately got to work on our costumes.  I decided to do simple masks, and use subtle details to really bring the costumes to light.

I added Bat symbols to Pat's mask, and I used black tulle and hot pink ribbon on my mask.  Pat's costume consisted of a tuxedo t-shirt, long trench coat, and a glow in the dark Batman belt buckle.

I made my shirt and cat ears, and wore black wet look leggings.

I'm thinking about writing a quick tutorial on how I made my ears.  They were really simple and you can make just about any color you need.

This photo looks like it came straight out of a comic book! I love it!

The amazing T-shirt quilt!

GOOD MORNING! Well, I'm not actually up this early, are you crazy!? I typed this last night. Anyone that knows me well knows I'm a natural night bird. My mom tells me all the time that when I was younger I was the last kid to bed and the last one up in the morning (er, afternoon). I've tried and tried again to change my natural time clock, but my body always tends to lean towards the night hours.

But I digress.....

This is probably one of my favorite creations. My boyfriend has a plethora of t-shirts. I mean, a gazillion! So one fine day, I tried to sit down with him to see if we could donate some. Well, that did not fare well. You see, he's really attached to his shirts. That's okay with me though. We all have certain things that we just can't stomach to give away. So I decided to see if maybe I could immortalize some of these shirts in a t-shirt quilt, so that he'd have the shirts forever. He agreed. And so, this amazing Irish t-shirt quilt was born.

I used 24 shirts total.  They were all Irish themed.  I really love how it came out!  It was way easier than I thought it would be too.

Because I used t-shirts for the front of the quilt, and cotton fabric for the back, I thought I would run into a problem stitching them together.  You see, jersey (t-shirt fabric) stretches and cotton (woven fabric) doesn't. I had no problem at all getting them stitched together though.  I found these cute shamrock print fabrics at JoAnn's on clearance since St. Patty's day had already come and gone.  I used black yarn to tack the front to the back, and voila! A t-shirt quilt was made. I'll be making another one shortly, using all of my boyfriend's travel t-shirts.

Until next time...

Luke, I am your father.......

Hello Hello! I'm back again.  I know I'm four days late, but I thought in honor of Star Wars day I'd show you the second garment I made in Clothing Construction class.  Ready...set....go!

A Star Wars mini skirt!  I found this super cute fabric at JoAnn's and it was half off! I couldn't resist.  I had to get it.  I got two yards for $10. That's a steal!  It was really funny because in class, I found that my taste/style was a bit off from everyone else's style.  Most people were using florals or stripes, and there I was, using Star Wars fabric.  But hey, I am who I am.  I adore Star Wars, especially the 70's version.  I could watch them over and over and over again.

I think my biggest crush was on Han Solo.  Hehe. Luke Skywalker comes in a CLOSE second, and Darth Vader, how could you not love him?  Okay, Okay....maybe I just love them all.  I'm okay with that.

So who is your favorite?

Oh Hai! A lot has changed since I last posted.  Sheesh, it's been almost a year since my last post.  At least I left you all with a tutorial right?! Anywho, I just finished up my first college class yesterday, and I'm so proud of myself.  I got an 'A' in class.  I was only required to make three garments, and I made four! Woot!

I've been sewing for myself a lot lately, and I finally got the courage to cut into this awesome fabric that I purchased over 5 years ago.  Wanna see what I turned it into?

This cute shirt of course!  It's not that I don't trust myself when it comes to sewing, but sometimes you find fabric that you just LOVE and it's hard to cut into it.  Sometimes you don't know if you'll have an 'off' day and screw something up, or it may just be that you don't know what you want to make out of the fabric.  I think I made the best decision.  This is probably one of my favorite shirts now.

Tutorial :: DIY Jewelry and Hair Bow Display

Ahoy me hearties! I've been super busy making jewelry and hair bows to sell at the new salon suite I'll be working at. I needed some display boards to show off my handy work, so I decided to do a little DIY and make some. You're also in for a treat since I made a tutorial on how to make them yourself.

These would be great to have in your room to display your own goodies, or make them to use at craft shows (or where ever you sell your goods). I got most of the supplies to make these at the dollar store, so they're super cheap to make.

You'll need:

2 Dry Erase Boards
2 Pieces of Felt
Hot Glue Gun (and glue sticks)
Roll of Large Printed Ribbon
Medium Sized Grosgrain Ribbon
Duct Tape
Scissors

First, you'll need to rip the rubber strip off of each of the boards.

Next, you'll need to glue the two boards together using your hot glue gun.

Now lay the two pieces of felt over top of the board. Carefully lift the felt and glue the felt to the board.

Once you're done gluing the felt to the board, flip the board over and trim the excess felt from around the edges of the board.

Measure out pieces of ribbon to glue over top of the felt. I left about one inch on each side so that I could fold the ribbon behind the board. Once you've measured out all your pieces, start gluing the pieces to the board.

Now, flip the board over so that you are looking at the back of the board. Carefully fold the excess ribbon over the edges of the board and glue. Continue gluing the excess ribbon down until finished.

The back of your board should look like this when you're done gluing the excess ribbon down.

Measure out the pieces of ribbon for your jewelry and hair bows. I used a medium width grosgrain ribbon for mine. Once you have your pieces laid out, fold the excess ribbon to the back of the board and glue.

Next, you'll need to add a piece of ribbon for a hanger.

Lastly, use duct tape to finish the edges of the back of the board. This makes it look a bit cleaner, and helps hold the edges of the ribbon taught.

You can also make these with just one board if you'd like a smaller display board. I used fabric to cover this one.
